English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Both of them are ignorant, one who holds the soul as, the slayer and the other who considers it, as slain; for the soul, neither slays, nor is slain.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Whoever thinks the Self kills, and whoever thinks it is killed, both are mistaken: it does neither.

What is Krishna saying?

Having described those who know the Self as imperishable, Krishna now speaks of those who do not. Swamiji explains that the Self has no doership of its own: it becomes a 'doer' only by identifying with the body and claiming the body's actions as its own. Nor can it die, because only what changes and is born can die, and the Self never changes. Because the setting is a battle, the verse speaks of killing and being killed, but in truth the Self is free of every action.

Step by step

  1. 1

The Self is not the doer; it only takes on doership by joining itself to the body.

  2. 2

Only what is born and changes can die; the Self never undergoes any change.

  3. 3

Those who see the Self as killer or killed give weight to non-discrimination instead of the discrimination between body and Self.

The craftsman without tools

However skilled a craftsman is, he cannot work without a tool. In the same way the Self can do nothing by itself without the body; all actions happen through prakriti.

Why it matters

Grief over killing and dying rests on treating the Self like the body. Seeing that it neither acts nor dies removes the ground for that grief.
