The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारThese bodies of the eternal, imperishable, immeasurable Self are said to have an end; therefore, Arjuna, fight.
What is Krishna saying?
The Self is 'anashi' (never diminished), 'aprameya' (not an object of the senses or mind — known through faith in scripture and saints) and 'nitya' (ever-present). Its bodies are 'antavanta': they are ending every moment and are nothing but ending. The Self is singular while bodies are plural, because each being has three bodies and one Self pervades all bodies. Just as no one can destroy the imperishable, no one can make the perishable last. The eternal has claimed these bodies as its own, producing 'I' (placing oneself in the body) and 'mine' (placing the body in oneself) — the root of all disorder. So Krishna concludes: understand real and unreal rightly, drop grief, and do your duty.
Placing oneself in things — 'I'अपनेको चीजोंमें रखना—अहंता
- In wealth: 'I am rich'
- In learning: 'I am learned'
- In the body: 'I am the body'
Placing things in oneself — 'mine'
- 'The family is mine'‘
- 'The wealth is mine'‘
- 'The body is mine'‘
Step by step
- 1
Where the senses and mind cannot be the proof, scripture and saints are the proof — for those who have faith; one is free to have faith or not.
- 2
Understanding sat leads straight to action: knowledge here does not mean withdrawal but doing one's duty free of grief.
- 3
The paths of knowledge (sankhya) and action (karma yoga) do not depend on any caste or stage of life; both are open to all for their own good.
- 4
One should first look at the Self, which is prior, not at the body, which comes later.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तHow 'I am rich' is born
Wherever the self places itself, an 'I' forms: put yourself in wealth and you become 'I am rich', in a kingdom 'I am king', in learning 'I am learned', in the body 'I am the body'. This identification with the inert is the source of every disorder.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींidentity
Tie yourself to a job title and losing the job feels like losing yourself. The title was something you placed yourself in — you were there before it and remain after it.
Why it matters
This closes the first argument of the Gita: knowing the Self as eternal and bodies as ending, grief loses its ground and duty becomes clear.
