English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

For the soul there is neither birth nor death; nor does it come into existence after having been born. It is unborn, eternal, constant and primeval. It is not killed, even when the body, is slain.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The Self is never born and never dies; unborn, eternal, changeless and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.

What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji reads this verse as a denial of the six changes every body goes through: being born, coming to exist, changing, growing, decaying and perishing. The Self is not born (na jayate, aja), does not come into being after birth (bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah), does not change (shashvata), does not grow (purana), does not decay (nitya) and does not die (na mriyate, na hanyate). Birth and death are the chief changes, so Krishna denies each twice. He adds that nowhere else in the Gita is the body and the Self described this clearly.

The body

  • Is born and then comes to exist
  • Changes, grows and declines
  • Dies when life-breath leaves itपिण्ड-प्राणके वियोगसे मरता है

The Self

  • Unborn (aja); its existence is self-evident
  • Changeless (shashvata), ancient (purana), undecaying (nitya)
  • Not slain when the body is slain

Step by step

  1. 1

Birth and death belong to the body, where life-breath joins and separates from it; in the Self there is neither union nor separation.

  2. 2

The existence of the Self is self-evident and changeless; it does not begin at some point like the existence of a born thing.

  3. 3

We have already taken up and left countless bodies, and our own being was not touched; it will be the same when this body goes.

  4. 4

Our nature and the body's nature are completely different; we are not stuck to the body, so nothing of ours is lost when it goes.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

A child's existence begins at birth

Nobody says 'the child is' before it is conceived; its existence begins after it is born and so has a beginning and an end. The Self's existence is not like that: it has no start and no end.

Phlegm and a boil are not limbs

Hands and feet are parts of the body, but phlegm and urine, which flow out, and a boil, which is a disorder, are not. Likewise the body, which keeps flowing and changing, is not a part of the Self.

identity

Your childhood photos, your college ID and your current face look like three different people, yet you know it was you each time. What saw all three stages is the part that never changed.

Why it matters

Arjuna grieved at the thought of his relatives dying. Krishna shows that even when the body dies, the Self does not cease to be, so grief for it is misplaced.
