What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji says these sixteen syllables hold the essence of all the Vedas and scriptures. The body was not before birth, will not be after death, and is ceasing every moment now — so it is 'asat', unreal; the whole world, of which the body is a small sample, is the same. The embodied Self, and God behind the world, were before, will be after, and remain unchanged now — that is 'sat', real. Even the existence the unreal seems to have is borrowed from the real. The seers conclude that only one Reality, 'is', exists. So Krishna tells Arjuna: will they not die if you do not fight? The unreal is dying anyway; the real never dies. Grief is only lack of understanding.

Asat — the unrealअसत्

  • Not before, not after, ceasing nowपहले नहीं, पीछे नहीं, अभी भी अभावमें

Step by step

  1. 1

We can see the world only once, never twice, because it changes every instant.

  2. 2

Even the senses, mind and intellect through which we see the world belong to the world; from the Self, the world is never seen at all.

  3. 3

The seeker's task is to accept the truth whether or not he has experienced it: accept 'is', reject 'is not'.

  4. 4

'Pandit', 'dhira' and 'tattvadarshi' all point to one thing: the discerning do not grieve.

Burning without ash

The whole world is burning continuously in the fire of time like wood. When wood burns, coal and ash remain; but time burns the world so completely that nothing at all remains.

The picture on the cinema screen

A scene on the cinema screen looks steady, but it is changing every instant; the film moves so fast our eyes cannot catch it. The world looks stable in the same way.

Why it matters

This is the Gita's compact statement of discernment (viveka): see what is passing as passing and what is real as real, and grief has nowhere to stand.
