English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO the best of men, a person to whom pain and pleasure are alike, and who is not tormented by these sense-objects, becomes eligible, for immortality.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारThe wise person whom these contacts do not disturb, who stays even in pleasure and pain, becomes fit for immortality.
What is Krishna saying?
Calling Arjuna 'best among men', Krishna notes that people usually try to change their circumstances, which cannot really be changed; Arjuna instead began thinking about his own good, and that is his greatness. Pleasure and pain appear separate only in the mind; the one who rests in his own Self is naturally even in both. Such a person still knows what is pleasant and unpleasant, but does not 'consume' it, so no lasting imprint forms. He becomes fit for immortality — which was always his, the only mistake being to think the comings and goings of objects changed him.
Consuming (bhoga)भोग
- Using comforts for my own pleasure and delighting in themसुख-सामग्रीको अपने सुखके लिये बरतकर राजी होना
- Being made miserable by bitter medicine or pain
- Leads to realms of enjoyment and suffering
Right use (sadupayoga)
- Using comforts for bare needs and serving the needy
- Bearing pain gladly, giving up the wish for pleasure
- Rises above both to immortality
Step by step
- 1
Human birth is not for experiencing pleasure and pain but for rising above them to supreme peace.
- 2
The right use of pleasure is to serve others; the right use of pain is to give up the desire for pleasure.
- 3
The cause of pain is the desire for pleasure; drop that desire and adverse situations cannot make you suffer.
- 4
Circumstances come by prarabdha; using them as means of practice is true effort.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe bitter medicine
A patient who has to take the bitterest medicine is not unhappy; he is glad because it is curing his illness. Bearing adversity with that understanding is the right use of pain.
Pulling out a deep thorn
When a deep thorn is removed with a needle, it hurts badly and the person winces, but he never says 'stop'. Knowing the pain will end forever, he bears it gladly.
The lakhpati among crorepatis
Being a lakhpati feels great only when those around have less. If everyone around were crorepatis, there would be no joy in it. So our comfort is really given by those who lack, and it rightly belongs in their service.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींmoney
The thrill of a new salary fades the moment you compare with a friend who earns double — proof that the pleasure came from comparison, not from the money.
failure
A failed exam can be consumed as misery, or used: it shows where the wish for easy comfort was, and becomes a step forward.
Why it matters
Swamiji turns every situation into practice: pleasure becomes service, pain becomes renunciation, and both lead beyond themselves.
