Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The body is ‘this’, something seen and always changing; the one who knows it is its knower, not the body itself.

What is Krishna saying?

We call animals, birds and trees ‘this’, yet call our own body sometimes ‘I’ and sometimes ‘mine’. Swamiji says the gross, subtle and causal bodies are all really ‘this’: things known by us. The body is called kshetra because it perishes and changes every moment, and also because, like a field, it yields whatever is sown: actions done here with ‘I’ and ‘mine’ bring further bodies and circumstances. So Krishna asks us to see the body as ‘this’, separate from us, which it already is. The knower is called kshetrajna only because of its link with the field; without that link it is the Supreme itself (13.31).

Step by step

  1. 1

Where the knot was tied, there it is untied: bondage comes through the human body, and release also comes through it.

  2. 2

Scenes change but the eye stays; the mind notices the eye’s changes, the intellect the mind’s, and the self the intellect’s. The self is never an object.

  3. 3

Feeling big because ‘I am rich’ or ‘I am learned’ lowers you: it makes the wealth or learning great, not you.

The body as a field

As a farmer sows different seeds and reaps the same kind of grain, the jiva, acting with ‘I’ and ‘mine’ in this body, sows actions whose impressions later bear fruit as new bodies and circumstances.

The title ‘wealthy’

A man is called ‘wealthy’ because of his link with money; take the money away and the man remains, but the title goes. In the same way the self is called ‘knower of the field’ only because of its link with the field.

identity

Your follower count, your grades, your job title and your face in the mirror are all ‘this’: things you see and track. Seeing them as ‘this’ rather than as ‘me’ is the first step this verse points to.

Why it matters

Swamiji says seeing the body as ‘this’ is essential for every human being, not only for seekers, because only in a human body do we have the right and the chance to be free. That is why the Gita’s teaching opens with the distinction between body and embodied (2.11 onward).

13.21

Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth

Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.

2.16

The unreal has no being; the real never ceases

The unreal has no existence and the real never ceases to be; the seers of truth have seen the essence of both.

2.17

That which pervades all cannot be destroyed

Know that to be imperishable by which all this is pervaded; no one can destroy the indestructible.
