Śraddhātraya-Vibhāga Yoga · The Yoga of the Threefold Division of Faith

Faith shapes the person, and shows in what one worships, eats, offers, endures and gives.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

At 16.23 Krishna said that those who set aside scripture and act on whim gain neither perfection, happiness nor the supreme goal. Arjuna then asks: many people do not know scripture but still worship with faith according to family and upbringing. What is their state: sattvic, or rajasic and tamasic? Krishna answers that everyone’s faith, born of nature, is of three kinds, and that a person is whatever his faith is. He shows how faith can be recognised in whom one worships, what food one likes, and how one does sacrifice, austerity of body, speech and mind, and charity, each in three kinds. Finally He gives Om Tat Sat, the three names of God, which make good whatever is lacking in acts done for Him, and says that whatever is done without faith is ‘asat’.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji’s introduction: after 16.23, Arjuna reasons that people who do not know scripture yet worship with faith should fall low for leaving scripture but rise for having faith. To learn their actual state, he asks the question with which chapter 17 opens.
