Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Words should cause no agitation or unrest in anyone, now or later. Truth means saying what was read, heard, seen or concluded exactly as it is, without selfishness or pride, to help others understand. Pleasant means free of cruelty, harshness, sarcasm, slander and insult, and spoken with love, sweetly, simply and calmly. Beneficial means free of violence, envy and enmity, full of love, compassion and forgiveness, and harmful to no one now or later. Study is reading and teaching texts like the Gita and Ramayana; practice is repeating and memorising them, chanting God’s name and praying. It also includes not criticising others, not telling their faults, not chattering idly, and not reading what feeds desire and anger.

social media

Before posting a hot take or a sarcastic reply, ask: is it true, is it kind, does it actually help anyone, and will it leave someone agitated? Swamiji’s four tests fit a comment box as well as a conversation.

Why it matters

It makes austerity something done every day: every sentence we speak can be tapas.
