Mokṣa-Sannyāsa Yoga · The Yoga of Liberation and Renunciation

The whole Gita gathered into one call: take refuge in Me alone.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Since Krishna spoke of the two paths, Sankhya and yoga (2.39, 3.3), Arjuna had wanted to understand each one separately, but found no chance to ask until now. He asks the essence of sannyasa and of tyaga. Krishna gives the views of others and then His own: sacrifice, charity and austerity are never to be given up; there are three kinds of renunciation; in Sankhya, action has five causes, and the self is not the doer. He sets out the three kinds of knowledge, action, doer, intellect, steadfastness and happiness, then the natural duties of the four varnas as worship of God, the path to Brahman and supreme devotion, and finally surrender, which culminates in ‘take refuge in Me alone’. Arjuna declares his delusion gone and Sanjaya concludes.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji’s introduction: just as Krishna found no occasion until chapter 16 to describe the divine and demonic natures, Arjuna found none from chapter 3 to 17 to ask about the two paths. After chapter 17 he finally asks. The chapter is named ‘Moksha-Sannyasa’ because its main subject is devotion to God, in which even liberation is renounced.
