यद्दानं
दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे।
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम्॥ २०॥

साधक-संजीवनीदान देना कर्तव्य है— ऐसे भावसे जो दान देश तथा काल और पात्रके प्राप्त होनेपर अनुपकारीको अर्थात् निष्कामभावसे दिया जाता है, वह दान सात्त्विक कहा गया है।

Sadhaka-SanjivaniA gift, charity which is made, to one from whom no return is expected, with the feeling, that it is one's duty to give, and which is given at a proper place and time and to a worthy person, that gift is held to be Sattvika (good).

Giving is my duty because I have accepted things as mine, and whoever has taken them as his own carries the responsibility to give. There should be no thought of what it will bring here or hereafter. Give to the ‘anupakari’, one who has not helped you, is not helping and is unlikely ever to help. Serve those who have helped you too, but do not count that as charity, and giving in the hope of a return makes the gift rajasic. ‘Place, time and recipient’ means giving where, when and to whom the thing is lacking and needed, and also at holy places and times to worthy people. Everything in creation belongs to all, so give a person what he needs as his own.
मैंने वस्तुओंको अपना माना है, इसलिये देनेकी जिम्मेवारी मुझपर है—इस भावसे दे; यहाँ-परलोकमें क्या फल होगा, यह भाव न हो। जिसने पहले उपकार नहीं किया, अभी नहीं करता और आगे करनेकी सम्भावना भी नहीं, ऐसे अनुपकारीको दे। उपकारीकी भी सेवा करे, पर उसे दानमें न गिने; उपकारकी आशासे देनेसे दान राजस हो जाता है। जिस देश, काल और व्यक्तिको जिस वस्तुकी आवश्यकता हो, वहाँ वह देना; तथा पवित्र देश, काल और उत्तम पात्रमें देना। सृष्टिकी सब चीजें सबकी हैं; जिसे आवश्यकता है, उसीकी वस्तु समझकर उसे दे।

Appendix: sattvic giving is really renunciation. It is not ‘give one, gain a thousand’, which creates a new tie; it cuts the tie with the thing, the fruit and the act.

हे पापरहित अर्जुन! उन गुणोंमें सत्त्वगुण निर्मल (स्वच्छ) होनेके कारण प्रकाशक (और) निर्विकार है। (वह) सुखकी आसक्तिसे और ज्ञानकी आसक्तिसे (देहीको) बाँधता है।
