English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Whatever oblation is offered, whatever charity (gift), is given, whatever penance is performed and whatsoever, is done, without faith, is called 'Asat', O Arjuna, it is of no avail here or hereafter.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Offering, charity, austerity or any other act done without faith is called ‘asat’: it bears fruit neither here nor hereafter.

What is Krishna saying?

People of demonic nature have no faith in the next world, rebirth, dharma or God, yet they perform rites because society respects them and they want to be counted among the respectable. All such acts, however grand, are ‘asat’ and bear no good fruit here or later. Done with faith and proper method but with desire, the same acts bring wealth, family here and heaven hereafter; done with faith and without desire, they purify the heart and lead to God. Even the smallest, most ordinary act, done for God without desire, becomes ‘sat’. What counts for reaching God is not the act but the feeling of faith.

Step by step

  1. 1

Sinful acts done with passion bear fruit even if the doer does not want it; the ‘no fruit’ here applies to good acts done without faith, and that fruitlessness is their penalty.

  2. 2

Appendix: chanting God’s name and singing His praise are not ‘acts’ in this sense but worship, because they are connected with God.

Why it matters

It closes the chapter’s teaching on faith: the value of what we do lies in the faith and purpose behind it.
