Daivāsura-Sampad-Vibhāga Yoga · The Yoga of the Division between the Divine and the Demonic Endowments

The qualities that free us and the qualities that bind us.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Krishna had hinted at the divine and demonic natures in 7.15–16, 9.12–13 and chapters 14–15, but Arjuna’s other questions left no room to explain them. Now, with no question pending, He describes both in full. He first gives the marks of the divine endowment, then of the demonic, says the divine leads to liberation and the demonic to bondage, and reassures Arjuna that he is born with the divine. He then shows how the demonic nature grows in one who turns away from God: good action, feeling and thought are lost, endless desires and daydreams of wealth and power take over, and downfall follows. He names desire, anger and greed as the three gates of hell and ends by making scripture the authority for action.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji’s introduction: from chapter 7 onward the divine and demonic natures kept being mentioned only in brief, because Arjuna’s questions about the vision, the formless and the one beyond the gunas came first. After chapter 15, with no question left, Krishna finally gets the occasion to describe them at length.

16.5

The divine frees and the demonic binds, and you are born to the divine

The divine nature leads to liberation and the demonic to bondage. Arjuna, you are born with the divine; do not grieve.

16.6

Two kinds of beings: facing God, or facing matter

There are only two kinds of beings here, divine and demonic; having described the divine at length, Krishna now turns to the demonic.

16.21

Desire, anger and greed: the three gates of hell

Desire, anger and greed are the three gates of hell that bring the self to ruin; therefore one should give up all three.

16.24

Let scripture be your authority on what to do

In deciding what should and should not be done, scripture is your authority; knowing what it prescribes, you should do your duty here.
