The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The divine nature leads to liberation and the demonic to bondage. Arjuna, you are born with the divine; do not grieve.

What is Krishna saying?

The more clearly a seeker holds ‘I must go only towards God’, the more he turns away from the world; demonic faults recede and divine virtues emerge. The divine nature is not only for oneself but for the welfare of all beings. Good qualities held while one’s sense of ‘I’ still says ‘let my body last, let me be comfortable’ are not wasted, but they do not liberate; at most they bring higher worlds. Hearing all this, Arjuna might think ‘I don’t see divine qualities in myself’, so Krishna reassures him, and every seeker through him: do not despair about your practice.

Step by step

  1. 1

Appendix: the root fault is accepting the body and world as real and important and relating to them; the root virtue is accepting God’s reality and importance and relating to Him.

  2. 2

Pride in one’s virtues turns even the divine qualities into fuel for the demonic.

  3. 3

‘Do not grieve’ appears twice in the Gita: here, about the means, and in 18.66, about the goal.

The seed in the soil

Soil, water, air and sun all nourish whatever seed is planted, and it grows into a tree of its own kind. Good deeds done while worldly seeds lie in one’s sense of ‘I’ likewise nourish those seeds and bear their fruit, not liberation.

The roasted seed

A roasted or boiled seed will not sprout; the earth simply absorbs it. When one firmly resolves ‘I want only God’, the worldly seeds in one’s sense of ‘I’ are destroyed in the same way.

Modern analogy · not from the source

self-doubt

The seeker who worries ‘I have no good qualities’ is often the one whose virtues no longer stand out to himself. Swamiji reads Krishna’s ‘do not grieve’ as addressed to exactly that worry.

Why it matters

It gives the whole chapter its direction: the aim is liberation, and the seeker is encouraged rather than frightened.
