Therefore, think of Me at all times, and tight the war. With your mind and intellect dedicated to Me, you will surely come to Me.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Remember God at every moment while doing your duty; with mind and intellect offered to Him, you will surely reach Him.

What is Krishna saying?

Since the end can come at any moment, Krishna tells Arjuna to remember Him at all times and also to fight. Swamiji notes that 'at all times' goes with remembering, not with fighting — no action can be continuous, but remembrance can, because the aim of reaching God stays awake all the time. Remembrance is primary and the duty at hand is secondary. Offering mind and intellect to God really means regarding them as His and never as one's own; our only true relation is with God.

Step by step

  1. 1

Every task has its time slot; remembrance of God should have none — it runs through all of them.

  2. 2

Remembrance comes naturally from belonging: the firmer the sense that God is mine, the more often He is remembered.

  3. 3

Three kinds of remembrance: from realisation (never lost), from relationship (lasts while the relation is held) and from practice (not continuous).

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The water pot on the head

Women carrying water pots on their heads walk with free hands and chat with friends, yet stay aware of the pot all the time. A tightrope walker sings while minding the rope; a driver talks while watching the road. That is how God can be kept in mind through all activity.

A daughter's wedding

A father arranging his daughter's wedding buys many things, does many jobs and invites many people, but never forgets that it is all for her wedding. When all work is done as God's work, His remembrance stays in the same way.

Modern analogy · not from the source

career

Like working on many tasks during a product launch while never losing sight of why you are doing any of them.

Why it matters

It removes the supposed conflict between spiritual life and daily duty: remembrance is kept constant, duty is done in its time.
