English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Whatever object or being a man thinks of at the time of his death or departure from the body, that alone does he attain, O Kaunteya (Arjuna) as having been always in these thoughts.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Whatever one remembers while leaving the body, one goes to that — so the price of a dog's birth can buy God.

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna states the general law: whatever a person thinks of at the end, absorbed in that thought, he goes to it. Swamiji points to the compassion hidden in this rule — God made no separate rule for Himself but included Himself in the common one, so the same price that earns a dog's birth can earn God. After death the last thought remains fixed until the next body, and a mental body forms from it. For animals the last thought depends on their karma, but for humans it depends on their own effort — which is why the human birth is so valuable.

Step by step

  1. 1

At death we cannot think whatever we like; what we think arises from the vasanas we built by giving things importance and taking pleasure in them.

  2. 2

The law holds both God's justice (we are free to remember anything) and His compassion (the same price buys Him).

  3. 3

Remembering God at the end breaks all artificial relations, because our relation with Him alone is real.

The photograph and the fly

A man sat for a photo and was told to keep still and smile. Just then a fly sat on his nose and he wrinkled it. The photo came out exactly like that and could not be changed later. So too, the birth one receives matches the state of mind at the moment of death.

Thread follows the needle

Just as thread goes wherever the needle leads, a person goes to the destination set by his final state of mind.

habits

Your last scroll before sleep tends to shape your dreams; what fills your days is what will surface on its own in the moments you do not choose.

Why it matters

Since the last thought is shaped by a lifetime of attachments, the real preparation for death is how we live now.
