What is Krishna saying?
Krishna now explains the 'not to be grieved for' of the previous verse through the eternity of the Self. As Krishna, Arjuna and kings, our forms were not seen before birth and will not be after death, but as existence itself we always were and always will be. By putting Himself alongside Arjuna and the kings, Krishna shows that in essence (satta) all are one. He mentions past and future but not the present, because we should experience right now that we are separate from bodies that are changing every moment. Swamiji draws a principle: what exists at the beginning and end also exists in the middle; what is absent at beginning and end is absent in the middle too.
Step by step
- 1
The bodies are impermanent; our essential existence is permanent.
- 2
Our existence is beyond time, because we know past, present and future — the knower of time is not within time.
- 3
The 'am' in 'I am' comes from the ego; without the ego only 'is' remains — that pure existence is our real nature.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तBefore and after sleep
Before sleep we know 'I am', and on waking we again know 'I am'; so during sleep too we were there — only the means of knowing outer things were absent. In the same way our bodies come and go, but we remain.
If our true existence was never born and will never end, the death of bodies cannot be a reason for grief.
