What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji distinguishes four things: kamana is wanting what one does not have; spriha is the felt need for things merely to sustain the body; mamata is taking what came from the world as 'mine'; ahanta is identifying 'I am this body'. The steady one is free of all four. Peace does not come from outside when these go — it is already present in everyone; only desire for perishable things and the tie of 'mine' create unrest. When they drop, the natural peace is experienced. Of the four, ahanta is chief: if there is no 'I', who will say 'mine' or desire anything?

Step by step

  1. 1

Desire is grossest; spriha is subtler, mamata subtler still, and ahanta subtlest. Dropping the first three makes dropping ahanta easy.

  2. 2

For a seeker, Swamiji advises dropping mamata first (it concerns what we already have), then desire, then need, then ego. Following the scriptural order makes one learned; following the seeker's order brings experience.

  3. 3

Karma-yoga: nothing is mine, I need nothing, all that I have is for the world's good. Sankhya: rest in pure 'is'. Bhakti: all that I call 'I' and 'mine' belongs to the Lord.

  4. 4

Even the wish for peace, liberation or knowledge is a desire; true desirelessness does not want even liberation.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The nose-ring in the well

A woman's nose-ring fell into a well. A man dived in and found it underwater, and was delighted, but could not speak until he came out. So in deep sleep the ego dissolves and we experience happiness, but can express it only on waking — proving that we exist even without the ego.

Deep sleep

On waking we say, 'I slept so well I knew nothing.' The one who experienced that happiness and knew 'I knew nothing' was present all along. So the absence of ego is experienced by everyone, but no one ever experiences their own absence.

career

'My team, my idea, my credit' — Swamiji suggests loosening 'mine' first. Once things stop being possessions, wanting more of them and needing them loosen too.

Why it matters

It gives a clear, practical order for letting go, and reveals that peace is not earned but uncovered.
