English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniJust as waters of different rivers enter the ocean, which though full, remains undisturbed; likewise the man in whom all enjoyments are merged and attains tranquillity, but not he, who hankers after such enjoyments.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारAs rivers flow into the full ocean without disturbing its bounds, one into whom all objects enter without causing change attains peace — not the one who craves objects.
What is Krishna saying?
Does the self-controlled one never come into contact with worldly things? He does — and remains unmoved. In the rains rivers swell and flood, yet the ocean does not rise; in summer they shrink, yet it does not fall. It needs nothing from the rivers and never leaves its bounds. So all the world's objects come to the one established in God, but produce no joy-sorrow disturbance in what is called his body and mind. His peace comes from God, not from objects. The one who craves objects never finds satisfaction however much he gets, because the conscious Self can never be satisfied by inert things.

- 1
Swamiji notes the ocean analogy does not fully fit: ocean and river water are the same kind, but the Real in which the sage abides and worldly objects are utterly different.
- 2
Objects reach only his so-called body and mind, never the Real in which he abides; the ocean image describes only the state of his body and mind.
- 3
When one becomes desireless, needed things come by themselves, yet their coming or not coming produces no elation in him.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe ocean and the rivers
In the monsoon rivers flood into the ocean, but the ocean does not rise; in summer they dwindle, but it does not fall. Whether water comes much, little or not at all, or is dried up by the sun, the ocean stays full and within its bounds.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींmoney
A bonus arrives or a bill hits your account; if your peace does not rise and fall with the balance, you have a small taste of the ocean in this verse.
Why it matters
It shows peace is not reached by gaining or avoiding things, but by a fullness that objects can neither add to nor take from.

Just as small ponds lose all use once a vast, full lake is found, the knower of God has no need of the rites of the Vedas.

2.69Night for the world is day for the sage

What is night for all beings, turning from God, the self-controlled one is awake to; what the world wakes for, pleasure and hoarding, is night to the sage.
