When the intellect crosses the swamp of delusion

yadā te mohakalilaṃ buddhivryatitariṣyati।

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

When your intellect crosses the mire of delusion, you will then acquire indifference, to what has been heard and what is yet to be heard, (about enjoyments of this world and the next).

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

When your intellect crosses the mire of delusion, you will become dispassionate towards all pleasures heard of and yet to be heard of.

What is Krishna saying?

'Moha' is taking the body as 'I' and family, things and possessions as 'mine'. Being pleased by the favourable, upset by the unfavourable, and partiality and envy within the family — all this is the 'swamp'. Caught in it, one becomes confused about what to do. Crossing it is the firm decision: 'I will not stay stuck here; I must attain my true welfare.' The two ways across are discrimination and service. Then dispassion towards pleasures of this world and the next arises — and it arises the very moment the intellect crosses, with no fixed timeline.

Step by step

  1. 1

The things we connect ourselves with can never stay with us, nor we with them.

  2. 2

Discrimination alone may waver when pleasures actually appear; one with a spirit of service turns even the best pleasures to others' service, so desire fades easily.

  3. 3

The attraction to pleasures, near or far, comes mainly through hearing — so Krishna says 'heard' rather than 'enjoyed'.

  4. 4

There is no rule of years or months — dispassion comes the instant the intellect crosses delusion.

The traveller who pitches camp on the road

Imagine a traveller who, before reaching his destination, sets up camp by the roadside and spends his time in games and fun. That is how a person spends life gathering perishable things and seeking pleasure from them and from family — this is the intellect stuck in the swamp.

The disciple, the son and the servant

When a disciple longs to please his guru, a son his parents, or a servant his master, his own wish for comfort fades by itself. So when the karma-yogi takes up service of all, his desire for his own pleasure fades naturally.

social media

Much of what we crave — a destination, a gadget, a lifestyle — we have never experienced; we only heard or saw it through a feed. Swamiji's point that attraction comes through 'hearing' fits this closely: the 'shrotavya' keeps growing with every scroll.

Why it matters

It gives a practical way out of entanglement — discrimination plus service — and assures that freedom need not take ages.

Both paths lead to the good — karma-yoga is better

Sankhya-yoga and karma-yoga both surely lead to one's highest good; but of the two, karma-yoga is superior to renunciation of action.

2.53

An intellect unshaken by conflicting views

When your intellect, confused by conflicting scriptural views, becomes still and immovable in God, you will attain Yoga.
