The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The wise, endowed with evenness, renounce the fruit born of action, are freed from the bondage of birth, and reach the state beyond all disorder.

What is Krishna saying?

Those with evenness are the truly wise. Action will turn into fruit — no one can stop that; so 'renouncing the fruit' means renouncing the desire, craving, possessiveness and latent longing for it, which everyone is capable of doing. With no attachment, aversion or desire left, there is no cause for rebirth. They reach the 'anamaya' state — free from every disorder — which is one's own nature, God. It is not made by effort; it is already so, and is realised when the assumed bond with the changing body is dropped.

Step by step

  1. 1

Renouncing the fruit has two meanings: giving up the desire for it, and not becoming happy or unhappy when favourable or unfavourable results arrive.

  2. 2

The whole changing world is nothing but the fruit of action; let go of that and no bondage remains.

  3. 3

The plural ('buddhiyuktah', 'manishinah') shows that everyone who stands in evenness is freed — no one is left out.

  4. 4

Karma-yoga is an independent means to liberation.

The seed sown without desire still sprouts

If a farmer sows seed without desire, will grain not grow? What is sown will surely come up. Likewise, desireless action still bears its fruit — but that fruit does not bind. So 'renouncing the fruit' means renouncing the desire for it.

Why it matters

It removes a common confusion: renunciation of fruit is not a strange refusal of results, but freedom from craving for them — something everyone can do.
