Evenness itself is Yoga
yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dhanañjaya।
siddhyasiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṃ yoga ucyate॥ 48॥
English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO Dhanafijaya (the conqueror of wealth), perform actions (duties)beingsteadfast in the path of Yoga, renouncing attachment, having become even-minded in success and failure; and that equanimity (equilibrium) is called Yoga.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारGiving up attachment, staying even in success and failure, established in Yoga, do your work — for evenness is called Yoga.
What is Krishna saying?
Having commanded action, Krishna now shows how to stay even while acting. First, let go of attachment — to any action, fruit, place, time, situation, or even one's own mind. The result of that is evenness in success and failure: whether the task is completed or not, the result is favourable or not, one is praised or blamed. Then remain steadily in that evenness throughout the work — not just once at the start. 'Samatvam yoga uchyate' is the Gita's definition of Yoga: evenness is the very nature of God.
Step by step
- 1
The karma-yogi's attitude: whether the work is completed or not, whether the result comes or not, even whether my liberation comes or not — I have only to do my duty.
- 2
Even if evenness hasn't come yet, make it your aim; what enters the aim is ultimately realised.
- 3
There are two kinds of evenness: evenness of the inner instrument, which is the means, and the evenness of God, which is the goal and arises from the means on its own.
- 4
Pleasure and pain born of contact with the world are both, in truth, suffering; separation from that contact is Yoga.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तNot like the opening prayer
At the start of a task we worship Ganesha once and then don't keep that worship with us throughout. Evenness is not like that — it is not taken on once at the beginning and then set aside while one goes on with attachment and aversion. One must stay in it the whole time.
The itch and the burn
In a skin disease like ringworm, scratching feels pleasant and the burning feels painful — but both are part of the disease. So too the pleasure and pain arising from our connection with the world are both, in reality, suffering.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींcareer
You prepare thoroughly for a job interview. If you get the offer, you don't swell with pride; if you're rejected, you don't collapse. You simply do the next right thing. That steadiness across both outcomes — not the outcome — is what this verse calls Yoga.
social media
A post gets a thousand likes, or it gets a harsh comment. Staying inwardly the same in praise and blame is exactly the evenness Swamiji lists: '
Why it matters
This is the Gita's own definition of Yoga — not a posture or trance, but steady evenness in the middle of action.
