English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Even if the vilest sinner worships Me with exclusive devotion, he should be considered a saint, for he has rightly resolved to be My devotee.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

If even the vilest person worships God with exclusive devotion, he must be regarded a saint, because he has resolved rightly — in his very self.

What is Krishna saying?

To show that His door is open to all, Krishna names the wrongdoer first. Even one whose past and present conduct is thoroughly bad, if he takes refuge in none but God, is to be considered a saint — this 'mantavyah' is God's own command. Swamiji explains that 'ananyabhak' does not mean unbroken meditation but having no other support than God: changing one's identity to 'I am God's and God is mine'. Conduct follows identity, so his conduct will quickly be reformed. People judge by outer behaviour, but God looks at the inner disposition.

Step by step

  1. 1

Changing the sense of 'I' purifies faster than rituals, austerity or charity.

  2. 2

Three ways with the ego: knowledge dissolves it, karma yoga purifies it, devotion changes it.

  3. 3

God is 'bhavagrahi' — He sees the inner feeling, not the lapses of conduct.

  4. 4

From the standpoint of devotion, all faults rest on turning away from God; turning towards Him ends them.

The billionaire's promise

If a billionaire promises money to anyone who comes, the promise is truly proven when even his enemy asks and receives it. That is why Krishna names the wrongdoer first.

The bride's new identity

Once married, a bride's sense of 'I now belong to my husband's home' never fades and needs no reminder, because it is in her very self. Such is the resolve 'I am God's'.

failure

Someone ashamed of past mistakes may feel unfit to begin spiritually. This verse says the decisive thing is not the record but the turning — the new 'I am His'.

Why it matters

No past disqualifies anyone from God; the one decisive step is to become His from within.
