English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO Dhanafijaya, action with a selfish motive is far inferior to that performed with equanimity of mind. Seek refuge in this evenness of mind, for low are those, who crave for fruit of action.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारAction done with desire is far inferior to evenness; take refuge in evenness, for those who make themselves the cause of the fruit are pitiable.
What is Krishna saying?
Actions arise and end, and their fruits come and go, but Yoga — evenness — is eternal and never changes. Without evenness, beings keep acting and keep being born, dying and suffering, because action alone has no power to liberate. To take refuge in evenness is to remain in it continuously. To become the cause of the fruit — to tie oneself to action, its fruit, its materials and the body — is the greatest poverty: the eternal self depending on a passing result.
Step by step
- 1
In Karma-yoga, what matters is 'yoga', not 'karma'; buddhi, yoga and buddhiyoga all mean the same.
- 2
Yoga is attained not through action but through service and renunciation; without these, it is just action, not Karma-yoga.
- 3
One established in evenness is no longer poor — he becomes fulfilled; one acting for himself stays forever needy and bound.
- 4
Restraint of mind happens now and then, in solitude; the firm resolve of the intellect can remain constantly.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तLight and darkness
Light and darkness can never stand side by side as equals. The gap between evenness and desire-driven action is like that between day and night: one leads to God, the other to birth and death.
An atom beside a mountain
You cannot compare an atom with a mountain by placing them side by side. Action is that far from Yoga — there is no comparison.
It tells us where real security lies: not in results, which come and go, but in evenness, which never leaves.
