One firm resolve, or endless scattered minds

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

O Joy of the Kurus, in this blessed path, the intellect is determinate and.concentrated, whereas the intellect of the undecided (infirm), is scattered in many directions, and is endlessly diverse.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The resolute intellect aimed at God is one; the minds of those driven by desires are endless, and each branches endlessly.

What is Krishna saying?

Having praised evenness, Krishna now gives the means to it: a single firm resolve (vyavasayatmika buddhi) to remove attachment to the world and attain God. This resolve is one because it is a renunciation, and renunciation is always one, whether of wealth or of fame. Grasping is many, because every object comes in many forms. Those without this resolve have endless aims, and each aim branches into countless schemes.

Step by step

  1. 1

Renunciation is one; wanting is many — that is why the resolute intellect is single.

  2. 2

In Karma-yoga and Bhakti-yoga the firm resolve comes first and realisation follows; in Jnana-yoga realisation comes first and the resolve follows naturally.

  3. 3

Until a person has one real aim, he has endless aims, and endless means for each.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

One wish, a hundred branches

'I must get wealth' is one aim; business, a job, even theft, robbery and cheating become its endless branches. Such a person's mind never settles on attaining God.

Even one sweet comes in many kinds

Grasping multiplies because every object itself has many varieties — even a single sweet comes in many kinds — so desires become endless.

Modern analogy · not from the source

career

Someone who wants to be 'successful' ends up chasing a promotion, a side hustle, followers and a new certification all at once, each spawning more plans. The verse points to why: many wants, no single aim — and it names that single aim as attaining God, not a better career goal.

Why it matters

A scattered life is not cured by better planning but by one decisive aim; everything else then falls into place.

Even the worst wrongdoer who turns to Me alone is to be regarded a saint

If even the vilest person worships God with exclusive devotion, he must be regarded a saint, because he has resolved rightly — in his very self.

2.44

Where pleasure grips the mind, resolve cannot form

Those whose minds are carried away by pleasure and possessions cannot even form the firm resolve to attain God.

2.48

Evenness itself is Yoga

Giving up attachment, staying even in success and failure, established in Yoga, do your work — for evenness is called Yoga.
