English
Sadhaka-Sanjivani · 2.42–43Arjuna, those who are obsessed by desires, who look upon heaven as the supreme goal and argue that there is nothing beyond heaven and pleasures and who are devoted to the letter of the Vedas, are unwise. They make this type of flowery speeches recommending many acts of various kinds, for the attainment of pleasure and prosperity, and with rebirth as their fruit.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारAbsorbed in desires and holding heaven supreme, such people praise many elaborate rites whose fruit is only pleasure, power and rebirth.

Such people are 'kamatmanah' — so steeped in desire that they become desire itself and cannot see themselves as separate from it. They believe no one can live or work without desire. Yet the self stays ever the same, while desire comes, goes, grows and shrinks; the self is a part of God, desire belongs to the world. The speech they favour leads to rebirth, because it values worldly pleasures, and attachment to pleasure is the cause of new birth. It also calls for many rites, materials and much physical effort.
Step by step
- 1
You and your desire are completely separate: you remain constant, desire keeps changing.
- 2
Attachment to pleasure is what leads to further birth.
- 3
Desire-based rites involve many procedures, many materials and much bodily effort.
Why it matters
Seeing that 'I' am not my desires is the first loosening of their grip.
