English
Sadhaka-Sanjivani · 2.42–43Arjuna, those who are obsessed by desires, who look upon heaven as the supreme goal and argue that there is nothing beyond heaven and pleasures and who are devoted to the letter of the Vedas, are unwise. They make this type of flowery speeches recommending many acts of various kinds, for the attainment of pleasure and prosperity, and with rebirth as their fruit.

Verses 42–44 explain why desire-driven minds are endless. Such people lack discrimination between the real and unreal, the lasting and fleeting. They take the Vedas to be only about pleasures and heaven, and say there is nothing else — no God, no liberation, no love for God. Swamiji explains 'flowery' (pushpita): such speech is only flowers and leaves, not fruit. Satisfaction comes from fruit, not from the beauty of blossoms.
Step by step
- 1
The lack of discrimination (aviveka) between lasting and fleeting is the root of this view.
- 2
Heavenly pleasures look beautiful but have no permanence.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तFlowers and leaves, but no fruit
Words that describe pleasures and power are like blossoms and leaves on a tree: pretty to look at, but you cannot eat them. Hunger is satisfied only by fruit.
It helps us notice when a promise of pleasure is dressed up as the whole purpose of life.
