English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO Arjuna, the Vedas deal with the three Gunas (attributes) and their evolutes. Be free from those attributes, rise above the polarity of opposites, remain balanced, be unconcerned about the meeting of wants and preservation, of what has been already attained and get established in the self.

What is Krishna saying?
After describing the desire-driven, Krishna now urges desirelessness. 'The Vedas deal with the three gunas' refers only to that part of the Vedas describing the gunas and heavenly worlds; it is not criticism of the Vedas but praise of desirelessness, since the Vedas also describe God and the means to him. Krishna asks Arjuna to rise above the world of the gunas, to be free of attachment-aversion and other pairs — the real enemies — and to rest in the ever-present God, leaving even the wish for acquiring and keeping, because the Lord himself looks after those devoted to him.
Step by step
- 1
Attachment and aversion are the real enemies that entangle us in the world.
- 2
Freedom from opposites comes in stages: first indifference to the unfavourable, then neutrality, then complete withdrawal (uparati) where no trace remains.
- 3
'Yoga' is gaining what one lacks; 'kshema' is protecting what one has — give up the craving for both.
- 4
At the deepest level, even seeing things as divided — inert and conscious, real and unreal — is a duality; in truth all is God.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तDescribing glass beside a diamond
When glass is described alongside a diamond, the aim is not to insult the glass but to show the diamond's worth. So too, the desire-oriented portion of the Vedas is mentioned here to show the glory of desirelessness, not to condemn the Vedas.
It shows the way out of the pull of pleasures: not suppression, but resting in the eternal and trusting God with one's gain and security.
