English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

The Blessed Lord said: Arjuna, you grieve for those who should not be grieved at, yet speak as if a man of wisdom. The wise grieve, neither for the living, nor for the dead.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

You grieve for those not worth grieving over while speaking learned words; the wise grieve neither for the dead nor for the living.

What is Krishna saying?

Here the Gita's teaching begins, and it begins with the division between the body (sharira) and its owner, the embodied Self (shariri). The shariri is imperishable, so grieving for it makes no sense; the body is perishable and never stays even a moment, so grieving for it makes no sense either. Grief arises only from lack of discernment. Swamiji traces grief to 'mine and not mine' — attachment and ownership. Arjuna's own arguments about ancestors falling from heaven actually prove that the Self outlives the body. The truly wise (pandit) are those whose discernment between real and unreal has matured.

Step by step

  1. 1

All faults such as grief, worry and fear arise from ownership, desire and attachment ('this is mine').

  2. 2

For the dead, perform the due rites; for the living, make arrangements — duty is a matter for thought, not for worry. Worry destroys clear thinking.

  3. 3

The greatest mistake is to call the body 'mine' and not to call God 'mine' — the body never stays with us, God always does.

  4. 4

As long as 'I am the body' remains, no amount of listening or practice brings liberation.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Shukadeva to King Parikshit

Swamiji quotes Shukadeva telling Parikshit to give up the 'animal understanding' that he will die: the body was not before and will perish, but he himself is not born and does not die like the body.

Tears reach the departed

Just as the water and offerings given for the departed reach them in the next world, the tears shed for them also reach them, and they must helplessly consume them. So one should not weep for the dead, but do the rites due to them.

relationships

Lying awake worrying about a parent's future helps no one; working out a concrete plan for their care is the actual duty. Swamiji's line: duty is for thinking, not for worrying.

Why it matters

The Gita starts not with ritual or belief but with a question every seeker must answer first: 'Who am I?' — I am not the body.

Confused about dharma and overpowered by weakness, Arjuna asks for what is decisively good for him and takes refuge in Krishna as His disciple.

2.16

The unreal has no being; the real never ceases

The unreal has no existence and the real never ceases to be; the seers of truth have seen the essence of both.
