English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

The difficulty in following their discipline of those whoseminds are attached to the Unmanifest is greater, for the Unmanifest is hard to reach, by the body-conscious beings.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Those drawn to the formless while still identified with the body face greater hardship; body-identification is the main obstacle there.

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna now compares the two paths' difficulty. 'Attached to the Unmanifest' describes seekers who admire formless worship but whose mind has not entered that reality, due to weak dispassion and body-identification. In formless worship the mind and senses have nothing to rest on, and the seeker leans on his own discrimination and strength. The devotee of the personal Lord has God's form, name and stories to hold, relies on God and not on his practice, and God Himself lifts him quickly. Swamiji adds that one drawn to the formless may follow it, but must not scorn or criticise the personal God.

  • Relies on God's strength
  • God removes his faults and uplifts himभगवान् दोष मिटाकर उद्धार करते हैं

Worship of the formless

Step by step

  1. 1

In formless worship, the tie to the body blocks unity; in devotion the only obstacle is turning away from God, not body-identification.

  2. 2

Devotion needs love and trust more than discrimination and dispassion.

  3. 3

If a seeker did not take himself to be the body, he could rest in the Unmanifest easily and quickly.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The kitten carried by its mother

A baby monkey clings to its mother and trusts its own grip; a kitten simply depends on its mother, who carries it. The devotee is like the kitten — he depends on God, and God looks after him.

Draupadi's call

Though Draupadi still held ill-will toward the Kauravas, the Lord appeared at her mere call, because she took Him as her own. God looks at love and trust, not at the devotee's faults.

जैसे, कौरवोंके प्रति द्वेष-वृत्ति रहते हुए भी द्रौपदीके पुकारनेमात्रसे भगवान् प्रकट हो जाते थे;

Why it matters

It is an honest map of difficulty: the problem is not the goal but our identification with the body — and devotion offers a gentler way past it.
