Bhakti Yoga · The Yoga of Devotion

Who is the better worshipper — of the form or the formless? Bhagavan answers, gives four steps for every seeker, and describes the devotee dear to him.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Across earlier chapters Bhagavan praised both worship of the formless (nirguṇa) and of himself with form (saguṇa), ending Chapter 11 with the glory of undivided devotion. So Arjuna asks which worshippers are better. Bhagavan says those who fix their minds on him with supreme faith are the best yogis in his view; worshippers of the formless also reach him, but their path is harder for those identified with the body, while he swiftly lifts his devotees out of the ocean of death. He then offers a ladder of means — fix the mind on him; if not, practise; if not, work for him; if not, give up the fruit of all actions — and says renouncing the fruit brings immediate peace. The chapter closes with the thirty-nine marks of the perfected devotee, who is supremely dear to him.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

From Chapter 4 onward Bhagavan praised knowledge and the formless in several places, while from Chapter 7 to 11 he stressed worship of himself with 'I' and 'Me', closing Chapter 11 with the glory of undivided devotion. Hearing both, Arjuna naturally wants to know which kind of worshipper is superior — and this chapter is the answer.

Questions this chapter answers

  • ?Of those who worship you with form and those who worship the imperishable unmanifest, who are the better knowers of yoga?
  • ?Do worshippers of the formless not reach Bhagavan too?
  • ?What should one do if one cannot fix the mind on Bhagavan?
  • ?What are the marks of a devotee dear to Bhagavan?

Verses to begin withमुख्य श्लोक

12.2

Those whose mind is set on Me are the best in yoga

Devotees who fix their mind on the Lord, stay ever joined to Him and worship with supreme faith are, in His view, the finest yogis.

12.5

The path of the Unmanifest is harder for the body-bound

Those drawn to the formless while still identified with the body face greater hardship; body-identification is the main obstacle there.

12.8

Place your mind and intellect in Me — you will dwell in Me

Set the mind and intellect on God and you will know that you already dwell in Him — there is no doubt about it.

12.12

Better than meditation is giving up the fruit — peace follows at once

Giving up desire for the fruits of all actions is not the lowest means; it brings supreme peace immediately.

12.13

No ill-will toward any being, friendly and compassionate — such a devotee is dear to Me

The realized devotee bears no hatred, is friendly and kind to all, free of mineness and ego, and even in pleasure and pain.
