Ātma Saṃyama Yoga · The Yoga of Self-Mastery
Lift yourself by yourself: the practice of meditation, the restless mind, and the assurance that no sincere effort is lost.
What is happening here?
Krishna again praises karma-yoga: the one who does his duty without depending on its fruit is both renunciate and yogi. Each person must lift himself by himself, for one is one's own friend and one's own enemy. Since the same samata can be reached through meditation, Krishna then teaches dhyana-yoga — the seat, posture, measured living, the mind steady like a flame in a windless place, and the joy beyond the senses in which even great sorrow cannot shake one. Arjuna objects that the mind is as hard to hold as the wind; Krishna agrees, and gives practice and dispassion. Arjuna asks what becomes of a seeker who falls short; Krishna assures him that one who does good never comes to grief. The chapter ends with Krishna's own view: of all yogis, the devotee absorbed in Him is the highest.
Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों
In chapter 5 Krishna said both paths lead to the good but karma-yoga is better, then briefly described meditation (5.27–28), which helps both, and closed with devotion. Swamiji notes that chapter 6 opens to establish the superiority of karma-yoga once more, and then, because the same samata is reached through meditation, expands dhyana-yoga in full. The chapter is named 'Atma-samyama' because by restraining the mind the meditator experiences yoga — samata.
