What is Krishna saying?

In 6.46 Krishna told Arjuna to be a yogi, but did not say which kind. Now, without being asked, He gives His own view: the devotee is the best. When one feels 'I am God's and God is mine', the mind settles in Him by itself — it doesn't have to be forced — and then eating, working, sleeping, even one's job, all become worship. Such a devotee, surrendered to the Lord of all yogas, has all the yogas in him. He cannot fall from yoga, because if at death he cannot remember God, God remembers him. Swamiji adds that the devotee walks small from the start, so even subtle ego does not remain, and in him love arises that grows every moment.

Step by step

  1. 1

Karma-yogis and jnana-yogis are also free and at peace; the devotee is called best because in him love for God is revealed, which keeps growing and never ends.

  2. 2

Those who rely on their own strength and effort can fall from yoga; the one who depends wholly on God is not allowed to fall.

  3. 3

Bhakti is present at the start of every path as attraction to God, and at the end as ever-growing love.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The bride's new home

After marriage a girl's mind naturally turns to her new home — no one has to force it. In the same way, once one feels God is one's own, the mind settles in Him by itself.

motivation

You don't need willpower to think about someone you love — the mind goes there on its own. The verse suggests that belonging, not force, is the easiest way to steady the mind.

Why it matters

It closes the first six chapters by revealing Krishna's own preference — devotion — and prepares the ground for the chapters on bhakti that follow.

The realized devotee bears no hatred, is friendly and kind to all, free of mineness and ego, and even in pleasure and pain.
