What is Krishna saying?
To lift oneself means to rise above the body, senses, mind, intellect and even the limited sense of 'I' — all of which belong to prakriti, not to one's real self. Swamiji insists that the self does not need them to reach God: relying on them is itself the bondage, because the real is reached by letting go of the unreal, not by means of it. Everyone has the power of discernment that makes this possible, whether on the path of knowledge, devotion or action. God, saints and scripture do uplift us — but only when we ourselves put faith in them; so many avatars and saints have come, and if we are not yet free, it is because we have not turned toward them.
Your own friend
- Takes no ownership of body, mind, things
- Puts faith in God, saints, scripture and follows themभगवान्, सन्त, शास्त्रमें श्रद्धा करके उनकी बात मानता है
Your own enemy
- Takes body and things as 'mine'
- Blames others for his fall or rise
Step by step
- 1
Reflect: I am not the body (it changes, I remain); it is not mine (I have no control over it); it is not for me (having it leaves my desires unfulfilled).
- 2
We fell by grabbing hold of the world — the world did not grab us. If we stop forming new ties, the old ones fall away by themselves.
- 3
Feeling big because of wealth, position or power is actually a fall — one becomes dependent on them while believing oneself free.
- 4
Look for faults in yourself, not others; be your own teacher, leader and ruler.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तFood and hunger
Someone else can give you food, but the hunger must be your own. Without your own hunger, food given by another is of no use; without your own longing, a guru's or saint's teaching is of no use.
ऐसे ही खुदकी लगन न हो तो गुरुका, सन्त-महात्माओंका उपदेश किस कामका?Childhood left on its own
We did not give up childhood — it left by itself. Then we caught hold of youth, 'I am young', but that tie too will not last. The old ties are always leaving; we keep making new ones.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींself-improvement
Endless courses, mentors and videos can't do the one thing that is yours to do: actually wanting to change and turning toward the advice you already have.
Why it matters
It places both freedom and responsibility with the seeker: no circumstance is the real obstacle, and no one else can take this step for us.

13.21Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth
Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.
