What is Krishna saying?
Krishna does not dismiss Arjuna's complaint; He agrees it is entirely right. Then He gives two means. Practice (abhyasa) is bringing the mind back to the goal again and again — every day, continuously, with value and respect for the goal. It has two forms: keep the mind on the goal and ignore whatever else comes up; or wherever the mind goes, see your goal there. Dispassion (vairagya) supports practice: the more attachment to worldly pleasures falls away, the more the mind settles in God. When old impressions throw up a thought, neither like nor dislike it — it will fade by itself.
Step by step
- 1
'Mahabaho' (mighty-armed) reminds Arjuna to bring a warrior's courage and patience to practice and never grow weary of it.
- 2
Aids to practice: japa without gaps while listening to the Name; counting the Name with the mind rather than beads; contemplating the Lord's form from feet to crown.
- 3
Ways to dispassion: see that the world changes every moment while the self does not; serve family members without wanting anything back; see that every fault and sorrow comes from attachment, and every peace from its absence.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तKunti asks for adversity
Arjuna's mother Kunti was so discerning and detached that she asked Krishna for adversity as a boon, so that she would keep having His darshan. By calling Arjuna 'Kaunteya', Krishna reminds him: be detached like your mother, and turn your mind to God.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींfocus
Every time you notice you've drifted to your phone during study and gently return to the page — without scolding yourself — that is abhyasa. Deleting the app that keeps pulling you is a small vairagya.
Why it matters
It turns a discouraging truth — 'the mind is hard to control' — into a workable method that anyone can begin today.
