Jñāna Karma Sannyāsa Yoga · The Yoga of Knowledge and the Renunciation of Action

An ancient yoga, the mystery of the Lord's coming, and the art of seeing inaction in action.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Krishna resumes the karma-yoga of chapter 2, revealing that He taught it long ago to the Sun, from whom it passed down through the royal sages until it was lost. When Arjuna asks how this can be, Krishna reveals the secret of His birth: unborn, He manifests whenever dharma declines, and whoever truly knows His divine birth and action attains Him. He then explains the truth of action — what is action, inaction and forbidden action — and describes the sage who sees inaction in action. Many kinds of spiritual practice are presented as forms of yajna, with the yajna of knowledge as highest. Finally Krishna praises knowledge, describes learning it from a realised teacher, and reveals that the karma-yogi finds it by himself — so Arjuna should cut his doubt and rise.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

Swamiji explains that after answering Arjuna's question at the end of chapter 3, Krishna pauses, then takes up again — with the word 'imam', 'this' — the karma-yoga begun in 2.47–48. So chapter 4 is regarded as an appendix to chapter 3. Karma-yoga has two sides: doing one's duty, and understanding action rightly. Chapter 3 stressed doing, because Arjuna wanted to give up action; chapter 4 stresses understanding — 'I will tell you that action, knowing which you will be freed from evil' (4.16).

Questions this chapter answers

  • ?Your birth is recent and the Sun's is ancient — how am I to understand that You taught this at the beginning? ४)
  • ?What is action and what is inaction — where even the wise are confused? (4.16)
  • ?Must I leave my duty and go to a teacher to gain knowledge?

Verses to begin withमुख्य श्लोक

4.7

Whenever dharma declines, I manifest Myself

Whenever dharma declines and adharma rises, the Lord manifests Himself in form.

4.11

As they take refuge in Me, so I receive them

In whatever way, with whatever relationship devotees take refuge in the Lord, He receives them in that same way.

4.18

Seeing inaction in action

Seeing inaction in action and action in inaction — untouched whether acting or not — one is wise, a yogi, with nothing left to do.

4.34

Learn it by bowing, asking and serving

Know that knowledge by prostrating before, serving, and sincerely questioning the wise who have realised the truth; they will teach it to you.

4.38

Nothing purifies like knowledge — and karma-yoga brings it

Nothing here purifies like knowledge; one perfected in yoga finds it, without fail, by himself, within himself.
