English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

The Blessed Lord said: It is desire and it is anger, born of the mode of passion (rajas), most greedy and most sinful. Know this to be the enemy concerned.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Desire, born of rajas, is what drives one to sin; blocked, it turns into anger. Insatiable and most sinful — know it as the enemy.

What is Krishna saying?

Arjuna asked what pushes a person into sin even against his will. Krishna names one thing: kama — 'let things go the way I want'. Desire for things that come and go, for pleasure from contact, is the root of every sin; when desire is blocked it turns into anger, when fulfilled it breeds greed, and when the obstacle is stronger than us it becomes fear. Krishna uses the singular because it is one root. Swamiji points out that giving up desire is not the hard thing we imagine: fulfilling all desires has never happened for anyone, while giving them up is possible for everyone, always.

Step by step

  1. 1

Sorrow is simply this: what we want doesn't happen and what we don't want does. Drop the 'want' and 'don't want', and where is sorrow?

  2. 2

The world runs on things and actions, not on the mind's desire; whatever is to come will come whether we desire it or not.

  3. 3

The wish for God, for service, for truth or for love of God is not 'kama' — it is the real need of life.

  4. 4

The simplest way to destroy desire is to serve others and give them happiness, without wanting anything back.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

From a hundred to a thousand

Someone wants a hundred rupees. Before that wish arose he was desireless; if he gets the money he is back in that same state. But because of attachment to pleasure it doesn't last — a new wish for a thousand arises. Desire is never finished; only toil is left in hand.

Not even Dasharatha

No one in the world has ever had all desires fulfilled — not even Dasharatha, the father of the Lord himself. So fulfilling desires is impossible, while giving them up is possible; the 'hard' thing is actually the easier one.

Modern analogy · not from the source

shopping

The phone you wanted for months feels 'enough' for about a week — then the next model appears. That gap between getting and wanting again is what Swamiji calls mahashana, the all-devouring.

anger

Road rage is desire blocked: 'I want to get there fast', and the car in front becomes the enemy. Remove the demand and the anger has nothing to stand on.

Why it matters

Karma-yoga's main aim is to remove desire; naming it as the single root of sin tells the seeker exactly where to fight.
