English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Better is one's own duty (dharma), though devoid of merit than the duty (dharma) of another even if well- performed. He who carries out the duty ordained, by his own nature, incurs no sin.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

One’s own dharma, even without merit, is better than another’s done well; doing the work set by one’s own nature, one incurs no sin.

What is Krishna saying?

Here ‘svadharma’ mainly means the duty of one’s varna, but Swamiji widens it: it is the duty of whatever one takes oneself to be or has accepted, whether human being, student, teacher, seeker or devotee. Even if one’s own duty seems lacking, harder and imperfect while another’s looks complete and easy, doing one’s own is best. Divine virtues are everyone’s svadharma; demonic faults are no one’s svadharma or paradharma but adharma, to be given up by all. All action carries some fault, but work set by one’s nature, done without selfishness and pride for others’ good, brings no sin. Harmful acts are never ‘set by nature’, even for one born into them; they come from desire.

Step by step

  1. 1

Being born in a butcher’s home is for bearing the fruit of past action, not for committing new wrong; one is free in how one acts.

  2. 2

No one wants harm done to themselves, so no one has the right to harm another.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Human, student, teacher

If you take yourself to be a human being, humanity is your svadharma. If you take yourself to be a student or a teacher, studying or teaching becomes your svadharma.

comparison

A friend’s startup looks glamorous and your job at the family shop or the hospital looks plain. The verse does not rank your role by how impressive it is; it says your own duty, done selflessly, is what frees you, and borrowing someone else’s does not.

Why it matters

It frees a seeker from both comparison and discouragement: what matters is not how glorious the duty is but how selflessly it is done.

3.35

Better your own duty, even imperfect

Your own dharma, even if it seems lacking, is better than another's done well; death in your own dharma brings good, another's brings fear.

3.37

Desire is the enemy

Desire, born of rajas, is what drives one to sin; blocked, it turns into anger. Insatiable and most sinful — know it as the enemy.
