Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Arjuna asks four questions about the one whose intellect is steady: what are his marks, and how does he speak, sit and move?

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna had just said that when Arjuna's intellect crosses the mire of delusion and the confusion of conflicting scriptural views, he will attain Yoga. Hearing this, Arjuna's personal question arises first: once I am established there, what will my marks be? He asks four things: what are the marks of one settled in God, how does he speak, how does he sit (withdraw from the world), and how does he walk (conduct himself). Swamiji notes that 'sthitaprajna' here covers both the seeker whose resolve never wavers and the realised one whose intellect has become steady.

Step by step

  1. 1

The four questions are answered in order: marks (2.55), speaking (2.56–57), sitting (2.58–63), and walking or conduct (2.64–71).

  2. 2

A seeker whose resolve is firm and who never slips from his practice is also called sthitaprajna, not only the one who has realised God.

  3. 3

For the karma-yogi, the flow of action continues the same way before and after perfection, so the marks of the perfected also serve as the path for the seeker.

Why it matters

The rest of the chapter is Krishna's answer to these four questions, so this verse is the map for the whole steady-wisdom section.

2.52

When the intellect crosses the swamp of delusion

When your intellect crosses the mire of delusion, you will become dispassionate towards all pleasures heard of and yet to be heard of.

2.53

An intellect unshaken by conflicting views

When your intellect, confused by conflicting scriptural views, becomes still and immovable in God, you will attain Yoga.
