What is Krishna saying?
Arjuna asked how such a person speaks — a question about action — but Krishna answers in terms of inner attitude, because action flows from attitude. When obstacles, criticism or unfavourable results come while doing one's duty, the karma-yogi is not agitated, since his aim is to act for others' good and stay watchful that attachment to the fruit does not creep in. When success and praise come, he does not wish that they last. Attachment is the root: fear arises when a stronger person threatens what we are attached to, and anger when a weaker one does. When the wish to serve others awakens, attachment fades, and fear and anger go with it.
Step by step
- 1
Raga is the colour that worldly things leave on the mind; fear and anger both grow from it.
- 2
Vasana, attachment, desire, hope, greed and craving are all forms of the one raga, named by degree.
- 3
While traces of agitation, craving, attachment, fear and anger remain, one is a seeker; free of them entirely, one is perfected.

Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींcareer
Your project gets harsh feedback, then later wins praise. The inner test Krishna describes is not the feedback itself but whether the first shakes you and the second makes you cling to it.
Why it matters
It moves the focus from outward behaviour to inner attitude, and shows that serving others is the practical way attachment, fear and anger dissolve.
