English
Sadhaka-Sanjivanibharata o son of Kunti, bodily sense-objects, which give rise to the feelings of heat and cold, pleasure and pain ete., are transitory and fleeting, therefore, Arjuna bear these patiently viz., remain unaffected by them or ignore them.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारContacts with sense objects bring pleasure and pain through the favourable and unfavourable; they come and go, are impermanent — bear them.
What is Krishna saying?
Having shown the eternity of the Self, Krishna now shows the impermanence of everything material. 'Matra-sparsha' means all objects known through the senses and mind. 'Cold and heat' stand for the favourable and the unfavourable. Objects themselves have no power to give joy or sorrow; we relate to them and project likes and dislikes, so they seem to. They are 'agamapayi' — they come and go — and 'anitya' — they do not even stay in the middle, changing every instant. To 'endure' (titiksha) does not mean not noticing what is pleasant or unpleasant; it means not letting attraction, aversion, elation or grief arise from it — staying unchanged.
Step by step
- 1
Not only objects but the senses and mind that know them are also changing.
- 2
Pleasure and pain are two, but the one who sees both is one, and separate from both.
- 3
A seeker's big mistake: he looks at the changing state but not at himself, who stays the same.
- 4
An assumed relationship persists even after the object is gone, until we ourselves withdraw our acceptance of it.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe tree and the two extremes
A tree dries up from too much cold and also from too much heat, so in the end cold and heat are the same. Likewise favourable and unfavourable are one in effect, and Krishna asks us to rise above both.
The widow who still reacts
A woman widowed fifty years ago still pricks up her ears when someone calls her 'so-and-so's wife'. The husband is long gone, but the assumed relationship remains — showing that attachment lives in the self's acceptance, not in the object.
The freshness gained from a good night's sleep is gone by evening, and we must sleep again. This shows the senses and mind are changing every moment.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींsocial media
A post that gets praise lifts you for an hour; a harsh comment drags you down for a day. Both pass. Noticing them is fine; being tossed around by them is what Krishna asks you to rise above.
Why it matters
Titiksha is not suppressing feelings but staying unchanged in them, knowing that you are the unchanging witness of what changes.
