English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

The pleasures that are born of attachment (with objects), are only sources of pain, these have a beginning and an end, O son of Kunti (Arjuna), no wise man finds happiness in them.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Pleasures born of sense-contact have a beginning and an end and are sources of sorrow; the discerning do not delight in them.

What is Krishna saying?

'Bhoga' is the pleasure felt when the senses meet their objects with attachment — and Swamiji widens it: being pleased by comfort, praise, even hearing someone else praise an idea we hold, is also bhoga. Such pleasures come and go, while the self remains; so the self can never be satisfied by them. They are 'wombs of sorrow' because they are born from the pain of lack and end in the pain of loss: the joy of getting something is only as big as the pain of not having it was. Merely noticing 'these come and go' already weakens their hold — Swamiji calls the word 'adyantavantah' a medicine.

Step by step

  1. 1

Three kinds of sorrow hide in every pleasure: the sorrow of its outcome, the burning while one has it (comparison, fear of loss), and the sorrow of remembering it once gone.

  2. 2

Pleasures can never come equally to two people, but God can be attained equally by every human being.

  3. 3

One who knows pleasures bring sorrow yet keeps chasing them is not truly wise, because he does not give weight to his own knowing.

  4. 4

Change is not the culprit — without change a seed would never become a tree; the fault is in seeking pleasure from change.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Sleep during satsang

During satsang, tamas brings on drowsiness and the pleasure of sleep pulls at us, while sattva says 'listen now, this chance won't come again'. This inner tug-of-war between the gunas is itself a source of sorrow for seekers.

social media

The rush of a post going viral is exactly as large as the itch for validation before it — and it leaves behind a new itch to check again. Beginning, end, and sorrow on both sides.

Why it matters

It gives the reason behind detachment: not that pleasure is sinful, but that it cannot give the self what it seeks and always carries sorrow with it.
