Cut the world-tree with the sword of non-attachment

The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारLooked at closely, the world has no beginning, end or real standing; its firm-looking roots are cut with the strong weapon of non-attachment.
What is Krishna saying?
While we are tied to the world through identification, mineness and desire, it looks pleasant and lasting. Seen from outside it with a discerning intellect, it is not found to be so. Its beginning, middle and end cannot be found from inside it, because the instruments we would use (senses, mind, intellect) are themselves parts of it. Its roots look firm only because of identification, mineness and desire. Cutting does not mean destroying things; it means removing our attachment to them. Our relation with the world is only assumed, so not accepting it cuts it. Swamiji says the real obstacle is wanting worldly pleasure while also wanting to be free of faults.
Step by step
- 1
Three levels of dispassion: from possessions; from family (relate to them only to serve); and the real one, from one’s own body.
- 2
Easy ways to end the relation: use what the world gave in the world’s service, drop the wish for pleasure and hoarding, and hold fast to ‘I am God’s, God is mine’.
- 3
Do not think these faults are hard to remove; they are coming and going all the time and only look permanent because we assume so.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तLost in the exhibition
A man wandering spellbound through a vast exhibition cannot tell where it begins or ends; he can know that only after stepping outside. Likewise the world’s beginning and end are never found while one stays attached to it.
The poisoned sweets
A greedy man wants the sweetness of poisoned sweets and also wants to escape the poison. That is impossible, and so is enjoying worldly pleasure while escaping its faults.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींhabits
Wanting the rush of scrolling for hours and also wanting a calm mind is Swamiji’s poisoned sweet: the sweetness and the poison come in the same bite.
Why it matters
The chapter’s first practical instruction: freedom does not require destroying anything, only withdrawing an attachment that was never real.

Everyone’s faith matches their inner nature; a person is made of faith, and whatever one’s faith is, that is what one is.
