English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

He alone truly sees God who perceives the Supreme Lord, as imperishable and abiding equally, in all perishable beings.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Among beings that are always perishing, one who sees the Supreme Lord present in all of them, equally and imperishably, alone sees rightly.

What is Krishna saying?

Beings differ in every way: moving and unmoving, sattvic, rajasic and tamasic, large and small. Yet God is present in all of them equally, not more in one and less in another. Every being passes through birth, life and dissolution and is never still for a moment, while God remains the same throughout. Seeing oneself along with the changing body is not right seeing; seeing oneself as one with the God who never changes is. Swamiji links this to 13.26: the field never stays still and the knower never changes, so recognise that you are always separating from the field, and experience your unity with Him.

Step by step

  1. 1

Changelessness is natural; change and attachment are artificial and only assumed.

  2. 2

Bound or free, sinner or righteous, this changeless reality is present equally in all.

The sky and the weather

Sunlight, darkness, smoke, black clouds, lightning, rain and hail all pass through the sky, but the sky is unaffected. In the same way creation and dissolution, birth and death, floods and wars pass through the all-pervading reality, which stays untouched.

The Ganga and its bedrock

The Ganga flows on constantly, clear or muddy, low or in flood, carrying flowers, rubbish or corpses, but the rock beneath stays as it is. Places, times, people and events keep flowing past, while the self stays unmoved.

Why it matters

Swamiji shows this as one of two ways out of the tie between field and knower: recognising your natural relation with God, who never changes in anything that changes.

Know Me as the knower in every field

The knower in every body is one with Me; seeing the body as one with the world, and the knower with Me, is knowledge.
