Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Not Vedas, sacrifice, charity or austerity, but only undivided devotion lets one know God in truth, see Him and enter into Him.

What is Krishna saying?

Having said that no practice can show His form, Krishna names the one means that can: ananya bhakti. Swamiji defines it as relying on God alone — His shelter, hope and trust — with not the slightest reliance on one's own ability, strength or even one's spiritual practice. Practice is done only to dissolve the pride of practice; when that pride melts, God's pure grace works without obstruction. Through such devotion one knows God as 'Vasudeva is all', can see Him in whichever form one longs for, and enters into Him.

Step by step

  1. 1

God is not attained by doing practices but by the melting of the pride of practice.

  2. 2

Knowledge (jnana) gives knowing and entering (18.55); devotion adds seeing — this is devotion's special glory.

  3. 3

The devotee's intense longing awakens a longing in God Himself to meet the devotee.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Dhruva and Vibhishana

God fulfils even a devotee's earlier worldly wishes and then brings him to real completeness. Dhruva received a kingdom of thirty-six thousand years and Vibhishana one lasting a whole kalpa, according to what they had wished before meeting the Lord.

Why it matters

It takes the pressure off being 'qualified': what God responds to is a heart that relies on Him alone.
