Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Five marks lead to God: acting for Him, holding Him supreme, belonging to Him, freedom from attachment, and no enmity toward any being.

What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji calls this verse the 'five-fold practice' (sadhana-panchaka), in two parts: closeness with God (matkarmakrit, matparamah, madbhaktah) and severing ties with the world (sangavarjitah, nirvairah sarvabhuteshu). The devotee does every action, spiritual or worldly, only to please God, since body, mind and ability are all His. He holds God as the supreme goal and knows 'I am only His and He alone is mine'. From this, attachment, mineness and desire fall away, and even one who harms him evokes no hostility — he sees God's will in it. With the world's bond cut, the ever-present God is attained.

Step by step

  1. 1

Belonging is the key to love: what is one's own is naturally dear.

  2. 2

Chapter 10 trains our power of thinking on His glories; chapter 11 trains our power of seeing to see all as His form.

  3. 3

Per the appendix: matkarmakrit is surrender with the gross body, matparamah with subtle and causal bodies, madbhaktah with the self itself.

relationships

Someone who wrongs you is still part of the whole you belong to; the verse asks that no grudge be kept alive inside, whatever you must do outwardly.

Why it matters

Swamiji sees this verse as the practical essence of the chapter: all of life turned toward God, nothing held against anyone.

Become God's devotee, fix the mind on Him, make every act His worship, bow to His every dispensation — so surrendered, you will reach Him.

By undivided devotion alone can I be known, seen and entered

Not Vedas, sacrifice, charity or austerity, but only undivided devotion lets one know God in truth, see Him and enter into Him.
