The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Wherever you see power, beauty, strength or any excellence, know it as springing from a fraction of God's splendour — not as belonging to that thing.

What is Krishna saying?

After listing His vibhutis, Krishna now tells His 'yoga': in any being, object, event, quality or action, whatever splendour, beauty, strength or excellence appears has arisen from a portion of His power. Swamiji argues that this excellence cannot belong to the thing itself — if it did, it would remain always and be seen by all. It is a glimpse of God, its support. When the mind stops at the object instead of God, one gets entangled and is never satisfied. So wherever something draws you, see God there; be grateful to those who help you, but do not get caught in them.

Step by step

  1. 1

If excellence belonged to the object, it would be there always and for everyone — it is not, so it is God's.

  2. 2

Taking a gift as one's own and not looking at the Giver breeds pride — this is the great mistake.

  3. 3

The vibhutis are taught to lead finally to 'Vasudevah sarvam' — seeing God everywhere.

  4. 4

Every perishing thing silently teaches: don't look at me, look at the One who made me.

The radio and the electricity

People marvel at the voice coming from a radio, but all its power is the electricity's. The unaware credit the machine; the knowing credit the current. So too, the wise see every excellence as God's.

The saint who heard a sweet voice

Hearing a courtesan sing beautifully, a saint was enraptured: 'See what a voice the Lord has given!' His eye went not to the singer but to God, whose sweetness it was.

Gold in the ornaments

When one sees gold in ornaments, the ornaments as such disappear; when one sees sugar in sugar toys, the toys disappear. When the sense of God becomes firm, the world disappears in the same way.

social media

Admiring a talented creator online, one can either get fixated on the person or, as Swamiji suggests, see the talent as God's — appreciation without entanglement.

comparison

When praised for a skill, remembering that it came from Him keeps it from turning into pride.

Why it matters

It turns every attraction into a reminder of God, and every talent of one's own into an occasion for gratitude instead of pride.
