Chapter 10 · Verse 42
Why know so much? I hold the whole universe in one fraction of Myself
athavā bahunaitena kiṃ jñātena tavārjuna।
viṣṭabhyāhamidaṃ kṛtsnamekāṃśena sthito jagat॥ 42॥
English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniOr what need is there, for you O Arjuna, of detailed knowledge? I stand supporting the entire universe, with a single fragment, of Myself.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारInstead of counting glories, look at God Himself: the entire universe rests in one fraction of Him — and He sits before Arjuna as his charioteer.
What is Krishna saying?
Having answered Arjuna's question, Krishna adds something essential on His own: 'Arjuna, what need is there to know so much? I sit before you holding the reins and the whip. I look small, yet in one fraction of this body countless universes rest — and I obey your commands.' Swamiji explains that even so, no part of God is filled up by those universes; space remains. The appendix makes the point: all of it is God Himself; when the support, source and seed of all glories is sitting in front of you, why think about the glories separately?
Step by step
- 1
The aim of the whole teaching on vibhutis is to turn our gaze to God Himself.
- 2
Pervaded and pervader, subtle and vast, real and unreal — all are God.
- 3
The Lord of countless universes serves as His devotee's charioteer — such is His grace.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe mind that never fills up
Our intellect is a tiny fraction of prakriti, yet however many languages, scripts and arts it learns, it never becomes 'full'. How then could any part of the infinite God be filled by countless universes?
It moves the seeker from collecting information about God to turning towards God Himself, who is close at hand.

Wherever you see power, beauty, strength or any excellence, know it as springing from a fraction of God's splendour — not as belonging to that thing.
