Chapter 4 · Verse 11
As they take refuge in Me, so I receive themजो जैसे मेरी शरण लेते हैं, मैं वैसे ही उन्हें आश्रय देता हूँ
ye yathā māṃ prapadyante tāṃstathaiva bhajāmyaham।
mama vatrmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ॥ 11॥
English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniO Partha! However, the way devotees worship Me, so do I approach them; for all men ultimately follow My path.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारIn whatever way, with whatever relationship devotees take refuge in the Lord, He receives them in that same way.
What is Krishna saying?
If a devotee takes the Lord as guru, He becomes the best guru; as disciple, the best disciple; as parent, son, brother, friend or servant — He becomes the best of each. Arjuna related to Krishna as a friend and wanted Him as charioteer, so He became his charioteer. The difference is that the devotee need only give his full strength; the Lord then comes with His full strength. Swamiji stresses that this verse is not about philosophical categories but about 'belonging' (apnapan): 'God alone is mine and I am God's.' What blocks us is that we keep back our understanding, time, things and ability as 'ours' instead of giving them fully.
Step by step
- 1
Surrender is the highest of all the devotional feelings: give Me everything and I give you everything; give Me yourself and I give you Myself.
- 2
Once a person offers himself, the Lord does not even remember his past faults — He looks at the firm feeling in the heart now.
- 3
Whatever relationship you love most in the world, make that relationship with God — and in the world, be for others what they take you to be, without wanting anything back.

Arjuna felt friendship for Krishna and wanted Him to drive his chariot, so Krishna became his charioteer. The sage Vishvamitra took Shri Rama as his disciple, and the Lord became his disciple.
Vidurani and the banana peels
When Vidurani forgot herself in love, the Lord too forgot Himself — He ate the banana peels she gave Him and enjoyed them.
The father and the toy
When a child wants a toy, the father spends money and brings it. In the same way, whatever we want, the merciful Lord comes before us in that form. If we did not want pleasures, why would He have to come as pleasures?
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींrelationships
Being a genuinely good son to your parents, a good sibling or partner — just for their sake, not for what you get — is, in Swamiji's words, following the Lord's own way.
Why it matters
God is not distant or conditional: the relationship we sincerely make with Him is the relationship He returns — and the only obstacle is what we hold back.
