Whenever dharma declines, I manifest Myselfजब-जब धर्मकी हानि होती है, तब-तब मैं प्रकट होता हूँ

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।

अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥ ७॥

Swamiji describes the decline of dharma concretely: the godless, sinful and strong oppress those who love God, live rightly, are innocent and weak, and good conduct shrinks while bad conduct grows. The root cause is attraction to perishable things; as attachment to pleasure and hoarding grows, adharma grows in society. The Lord is the supreme well-wisher of every being, so to stop people from falling He comes Himself. At the deepest level, desire entering action is the loss of dharma, and falling from one's duty into forbidden conduct is the rise of adharma — the Lord comes to destroy kama and spread selflessness.

स्वामीजी धर्मकी हानिका स्वरूप बताते हैं—भगवत्प्रेमी, सदाचारी, निरपराध और निर्बल मनुष्योंपर पापी, दुराचारी और बलवान् मनुष्योंका अत्याचार बढ़ना तथा सद्गुण-सदाचारोंकी कमी और दुर्गुण-दुराचारोंकी वृद्धि होना। इसका मुख्य कारण है—नाशवान् पदार्थोंकी ओर आकर्षण; भोग और संग्रहमें आसक्ति बढ़नेसे समाजमें अधर्म बढ़ता है। भगवान् प्राणिमात्रके परम सुहृद् हैं, इसलिये लोगोंको पतनसे रोकनेके लिये स्वयं अवतार लेते हैं। कर्मोंमें सकामभाव उत्पन्न होना ही धर्मकी हानि है और कर्तव्यसे च्युत होकर निषिद्ध आचरण करना अधर्मका अभ्युत्थान है; अत: ‘काम’का नाश और निष्कामभावका प्रसार करनेके लिये भगवान् अवतार लेते हैं।

Before the Lord Himself comes, saints and earnest seekers are sent or arise to re-establish dharma; where they live, adharma does not grow as much.

At the churning of the ocean the Lord churned as Ajita, held up Mount Mandara as the tortoise, pressed it down from above with a thousand arms, and then took the form of Mohini to distribute the nectar — many forms at the same time.

समुद्र-मन्थनके समय भगवान्ने अजितरूपसे मन्थन किया, कच्छपरूपसे मन्दराचलको धारण किया, सहस्रबाहुरूपसे उसे ऊपरसे दबाया और फिर मोहिनी-रूपसे अमृत बाँटा—एक साथ अनेक रूप।

Desire is the enemy

कामना ही वैरी है

काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भव:।

Desire, born of rajas, is what drives one to sin; blocked, it turns into anger. Insatiable and most sinful — know it as the enemy.

रजोगुणसे उत्पन्न कामना ही पापका कारण है; बाधा लगनेपर वही क्रोध बन जाती है। यह कभी तृप्त नहीं होती, महापापी है—इसे ही वैरी जान।

परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम्।

साधुओं (भक्तों)-की रक्षा करनेके लिये, पापकर्म करनेवालोंका विनाश करनेके लिये और धर्मकी स्थापना करनेके लिये (मैं) युग-युगमें प्रकट हुआ करता हूँ।

अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन्।

(मैं) अजन्मा (और) अविनाशी-स्वरूप होते हुए भी (तथा) सम्पूर्ण प्राणियोंका ईश्वर होते हुए भी अपनी प्रकृतिको अधीन करके अपनी योगमायासे प्रकट होता हूँ।
