What is Krishna saying?

After Karma-yoga, Sankhya and a brief account of meditation, Krishna closes the chapter with the path of devotion. Three recognitions bring peace. First, He is the real enjoyer of every good act — whoever we worship, feed or guide, He is present in their heart, so the aim should rest on Him, not on the person. Second, He is the Lord of all worlds — so an honest person cannot call anything in creation 'mine'; saying 'God owns everything' while holding things as mine is self-deception. Third, He is the friend of all beings — mighty, yet caring for us without any motive; then where is room for fear or worry? Swamiji says holding even one of these firmly is enough.

Step by step

  1. 1

Three things block God-realisation: wanting something for oneself, taking anything as 'mine', and not taking God as one's own.

  2. 2

Only two do good to all beings without any reason: the Lord and His devotees — and the devotees' friendliness too comes from Him.

  3. 3

We have the right only to use the body and things well, never to own them.

anxiety

When you trust that someone far wiser and stronger than you genuinely wants your good, the 3 a.m. spiral of 'what if' loses its footing — this is the peace the verse describes.

Why it matters

It ends a chapter about two paths by pointing to the simplest one: recognising God as the true enjoyer, owner and friend — and resting in that.
